Established in 2008 with support from the former Hanban, the Multilingual Base for International Promotion of Chinese Language is an innovative center at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). The Base leverages BFSU’s unparalleled ecosystem—a portfolio of 101 foreign languages, deep expertise in second-language teaching, research, and publishing, and an extensive global network—to train international Chinese language teachers and develop innovative instructional materials. It is a key driver of the sustainable growth of Confucius Institutes and the global advancement of international Chinese language education.
The Base operates through a globally responsive strategy, hosting international experts and deploying our specialists abroad to meet on-the-ground needs. Drawing on BFSU’s multilingual capabilities and global network, we actively provide comprehensive personnel, resource, and academic support for the development of Confucius Institutes and the broader field of international Chinese language education.
Our core activities include: delivering multilingual training programs for teachers; developing Chinese teaching resources and advancing the field through research-driven pedagogy; addressing the specific Chinese language educational needs of different countries and regions; strengthening the institutional capacity of our Confucius Institutes; and fostering diverse cultural and educational exchanges among students and scholars.
As a key national partner, the Base provides essential services to the Center for Language Education and Cooperation and the Chinese International Education Foundation, including multilingual translation and review, teacher training, and pedagogical workshops
As a think tank, the Base translates its research into actionable insights and strategic recommendations that inform national policy.
Our vision is realized through three core pillars:
1. A Premier Talent Hub: Leveraging BFSU’s signature multilingual and interdisciplinary excellence to provide elite training for professionals and administrators, the Base serves as a primary talent pipeline for the field.
2. A Strategic Think Tank: Fostering collaborative innovation and conducting in-depth research into the characteristics and principles of localized Chinese teaching and cultural ambassadorship, the Base positions itself as a foremost authority on area studies and strategic research for the global promotion of Chinese language and culture.
3. An Engine of Innovation: Serving as the leading center for resource development by producing the textbooks, dictionaries, and cultural products that learners need most, the Base supports the long-term vitality of international Chinese language education and the Confucius Institute network.
