About the Institute
The Confucius Institute in Olomouc is a joint initiative of the Office of Confucius Institutes, Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) and the Faculty of Arts at Palacký University Olomouc, established in May 2023. It serves as the primary center for Chinese language instruction and cultural engagement in the Olomouc region.
The Institute is located in Olomouc, a city of approximately 103,000 residents in the heart of Moravia and the second-largest historic and cultural center in the Czech Republic after Prague. Facilities include an office and a library. As of the end of 2025, the Institute has enrolled a cumulative total of 1,197 students across 3 teaching sites.
Programs and Activities
Chinese Language Teaching & Proficiency Tests
The Institute offers Chinese language and culture courses to university students, primary and secondary school students, and the general public. Course offerings include beginner, intermediate, and advanced comprehensive Chinese, HSK exam preparation, calligraphy, Chinese painting, and Chinese dance. The three teaching sites serve the broader Olomouc region. In the 2025 academic year, 344 students were enrolled.
The Institute administers the HSK, HSKK, and YCT on a regular basis. Total test-takers in 2025 numbered 52.
Faculty Development & Academic Research
The Institute actively supports teacher professional development by participating in training programs and workshops organized by BFSU and sister Confucius Institutes, equipping instructors with up-to-date pedagogical skills and subject expertise.
Cultural Programs
The Institute organizes approximately 20 cultural events per year, drawing more than 1,000 participants. Signature events include the Chinese New Year celebration, “Chinese Bridge” competition, and Chinese Corner conversation sessions. The Institute maintains an ongoing partnership with Palacký University to advance Chinese–Czech cultural exchange.
Looking Ahead
The Confucius Institute in Olomouc will continue to develop its Chinese language and culture curriculum, broaden its partnership with Palacký University and the Moravian Business College, and strengthen its role as a platform for Czech–Chinese educational and cultural exchange.
