The Confucius Institute at University of Rome La Sapienza was established on September 29, 2006, co-built by Beijing Foreign Studies University and Sapienza University of Rome. It is the first Confucius Institute in Rome and the second in Europe.

 

About Us

The Confucius Institute at University of Rome La Sapienza aims to provide a platform for all-round exchanges in education, culture and society between China and Italy and acts as a motive for the educational internationalization of Italy. Since its founding, 6 Chinese directors, over 20 state-sent teachers and 30 volunteer teachers have worked here. Prof. Masini, renowned Sinologist and Vice President of Sapienza University of Rome has been working as the Foreign director of the Institute. Under the joint efforts of teachers from both sides, Confucius Institute at University of Rome La Sapienza has been awarded the honorable title of “Outstanding Confucius Institute” by Office of Chinese Language Council International (known as “Hanban”) for many times. Prof. Masini was also conferred the honor of “Individual Performance Excellence Award” and was given “Sino-Italy Friendship Award”. In 2014, Prof. Masini won the 8th session of “Chinese Books Special Contribution Award” for his great contribution in introducing China to the world, translating and publishing Chinese books as well as promoting Sino-Italy cultural exchanges. At the 9th Confucius Institute Conference, the Confucius Institute at University of Rome La Sapienza won “Confucius Institute Pioneer Award”.

 

Features of the Institute

Regular courses in the Institute include A and B level classes at junior, secondary and senior degrees, advanced courses A, B and C for adults at nine levels. Besides, for students of different ages and needs, the Institute provides four levels of Chinese language courses for children, and special courses such as higher and intermediate level business Chinese, Chinese-Italian translation, magazine and periodical reading, intermediate and higher level oral Chinese. About 10 kinds of courses have been set, and new kinds of courses are still under development and tests. Since its establishment, the Institute has received over 17,000 students.

The Confucius Institute at Rome University created the model of “1+1 model of cooperative teaching of Italian and Chinese teachers”. Native Italian teachers are in charge of Chinese grammar, characters and explanatory teaching, while Chinese teachers are responsible for oral Chinese practice, which gives a full play of advantages of two sides and promotes teaching through cooperation. To guarantee the teaching quality, the Institute takes measures of pre-training, collective preparation of instruction, spot check and evaluation of teaching. With the adoption of these measures, the teaching effects are widely appreciated.

 

HSK, HSKK Tests

From 2012 to 2014, the Confucius Institute held Chinese language proficiency tests every June, covering all six levels of testing. The Confucius Classroom under its administration organizes Chinese language proficiency tests for students annually, and the number of test takers are increasing every year, from 379 in 2012 to 458 in 2013 and reaching 458 in 2013. Besides, in 2014, the Institute held HSKK Tests for the first time and held twice within the year, and increased the frequency of HSK Test from once a year to twice a year. At the same time, YCT and BCT Tests are added, making it more convenient for Chinese language learners in Lazio and central and southern parts of Italy to apply for scholarship.

 

Cultural Activities

Cultural activities are an important work of Confucius Institute in Rome. As the most important brand in Chinese cultural transmission in Rome and the whole Lazio region, the Institute has been working to create a comprehensive and diversified cultural exchange platform. Since its founding, it has held nearly 100 large-scale cultural activities, with over 100,000 participants. As for large-scale special activities, it has successfully hosted or co-organized the 2011 “China-Italian Culture Exchange Year” related large-scale celebrations, the annual New Year party, “Three Tours” performances in dozens of major cities and regions covering Italy from south to north, all of which produced sensational impacts.

In terms of daily cultural activities, the Institute promotes the idea of combining knowledge popularization and personal experience, providing lectures, exhibitions, competitions and other activities. It also provides workshops, cultural weeks and other interactive experiential activities in various forms. Activities related to all aspects of Chinese culture, such as Chinese calligraphy and painting, Chinese poetry, traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese martial arts, folk music and flower arrangements, incense arts, etc. are warmly welcome.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute and the 8th anniversary of the Confucius Institute in Rome, it held up 18 days of “Global Confucius Institute Day—The Roman Station” large-scale celebration activities, which went into the Leisure Square Roman people love, classical park, Chinese restaurant, etc. A number of Italian and Chinese media gave nearly 20 comprehensive reports, covering up to 6,000 audience. In the Lazio region, “Confucius Institute” boom lasted for a month.

 

Scientific Researches

The Confucius Institute at the University of Rome, in line with the purpose “to promote teaching by research,” makes annual plans and sets the goal and direction of research work, in order to improve the teaching quality.

In 2014, annual school teaching and research work focus on the “immersion” teaching model and preparation of Chinese curriculum for Italian high schools.

 

The Release of the Bulletin of the Confucius Institute

Sponsored by the China Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban, and Confucius Institute in Rome, the Italian-Chinese bilingual version of Confucius Institute bimonthly was officially released in March 2014.

The bulletin sets up a variety of columns such as: Headquarters News, Current Figures, Stroll in China, Confucius Institute and Chinese Language Class, involving the work of the Confucius Institute, Chinese language teaching research and test, Chinese history and cultural fields. The bulletin will present Italian readers with Chinese language and culture, Italian-Chinese cultural comparison, information of learning Chinese language and other aspects, serving as an important window for the Italian people to understand Chinese language and culture.

 

Future Development Goal

Vision for the future development of the Confucius Institute at the University of Rome is to become the leader in Lazio Region and Italian central and southern region of Chinese language teaching and cultural promotion and to set an example for building a brand image in Italy and the whole Europe. In the future, Confucius Institute at the University of Rome will continue to strengthen scientific management, and constantly expand the scale of teaching, focusing on teacher training and the promotion of Chinese language Tests; and will make use of its influence in Rome and throughout Italy to guide and supervise the spread of Chinese culture in Italy, to improve the local cultural influence and social influence of Confucius Institute, in order to make the work of the Confucius Institute to better integrate into the local cultural environment, thus promoting China-Italy cultural exchanges and mutual learning, innovation and development, and interactive opening; in the next five years, the Confucius Institute in Rome will continue to build cultural image and social image to serve as an indispensable force promoting Italian education internationalization process.
