On March 31st, 2011, the Confucius Institute at Moscow State Linguistic University (CIMSLU) officially entered into operation with Moscow State Linguistic University (MSLU) as its foreign cooperative institution and Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) as its Chinese cooperative institution. The present foreign director of Confucius Institute is Селезнев Андрей, Associate Professor of Translation Department of MSLU and the present Chinese director of Confucius Institute is Wang Fengying, Professor of Russian Department of BFSU.
Faculty members
6 Chinese teachers (including volunteer teachers) and 3 local teachers.
Teaching site and equipment
Teaching sites cover 187 square meters, including 4 classrooms, 3 offices, 1 library, and 1 cloakroom.
3.Chinese language teaching and HSK tests
3.1 We break the normal school teaching mode and further push foreign language teaching by adopting applicable notions, theories and methods for foreign language teaching, utilizing multimedia techniques to develop a three-dimensional teaching mode and opening various Chinese training classes categorized by grade, level and discipline.
3.2 Chinese language teaching is geared to HSK tests as Chinese teaching at each stage would parallel with the corresponding HSK test level: HSK level 1 by the end of the first semester; HSK level 3 by the end of the second semester; HSK level 4 by the end of the third semester and HSK level 5 by the end of the fourth semester.
3.3 We are negotiating with relevant schools in Moscow to set up online Chinese teaching system, which, once accessible, would greatly increase the number of potential Chinese learners.
3.4 HSK tests: We established the HSK test center in 2012 and till now 11 tests have been taken here and over 3,000 people have participated in the test.
Features of CIMSLU
4.1 Support from both Universities
BFSU and MSLU cooperate with each other to offer policy support to the Confucius Institute as well as provide it with numerous facilities and multimedia interaction equipment to improve its teaching conditions.
4.2 Comprehensive teaching management system
Apart from formulating rules and regulations for teaching management, we organized demonstration classes of various levels and types, after which the teachers will discuss with and learn from each other, and give advice on strengths, shortcomings and improvements about the demonstration class. Every new teacher has to go through a trial lesson before teaching a formal class and after that, all teachers will make appraisal of the class and give constructive suggestions for improvements. At the end of each semester, we’d involve all students in a class-appraisal questionnaire survey aiming at enhancing teaching quality based on teaching program and levels of students.
4.3 Equal importance to teaching, scientific research and tests
In May 2014, subject to permission from the examination office of our headquarters, we tracked and researched all results of tests for different levels and types at our test center, based on which we developed an academic paper. We’d use all or some of the HSK test papers at different teaching stages in order to test the students of Confucius Institute and those who have registered on the credit regime and meanwhile to advertise the HSK tests. We jointly hold the International Symposium on Chinese-teaching and Chinese Culture with MSLU every two years. The 4th international symposium was held in 2015. In addition, BFSU and MSLU are compiling together suitable Chinese language teaching textbooks for Russian students which are expected to be completed by December 2016.
4.4 Expand influence through cultural activities
We are committed to hold more cultural activities to bring Chinese culture closer to our Russian friends. Over the last three-plus years, CIMSLU has hosted more than 30 cultural events, large or small.
4.5 Enhance cooperation and influence of our CI with the policy of “going global”
Since October 2014, we have opened free Chinese calligraphy classes for students of CI and MSLU. The class is scheduled four times a week and till now the number of the attendees totaled 220. In June and August of 2014, together with Fire Phoenix Martial Arts School in the State of Коломна, we set up two summer camps and 89 students took part in them. During November and December of 2014, we gave five lectures and training about Chinese culture to students from school of languages of Moscow University of Humanities and the number of the attendees amounted to 150.
We welcome delegation of principals of foreign schools to come and visit Chinese schools to expand our common ground in opening Chinese classes in elementary and secondary schools. In 2014, 3 of 11 schools whose principals had been members of the delegation opened Chinese language classes and another two schools are planning to do so in 2015. CI has established a cooperative relationship with these schools and regularly delivers various open classes and speeches about Chinese language and Chinese culture there.
CIMSLU, like a toddler, is just learning to stand on her own. We expect to move forward steadily in strides with the help and support from BFSU and MSLU.
